Here is a sample of comments from some of the advance readers:

"If J.D.Salinger and Allen Ginsberg could have created a child together, he might have been David Madgalene."

-Vilma Ginzberg [no relation to Allen]
Healdsburg [CA] Literary Laureate Emerita 2008/2009

"I once referred to the bizarre David Madgalene as “his generation’s Walt Whitman.” Perhaps too lofty praise? However, upon reading Goodbye Gothic Rose, I congratulated myself for having correctly recognized the conjunction with his antecedent."

—Ed Coletti, poet and author of When Hearts Outlive Minds (Conflux Press, Prescott, Arizona 2011).

“Like Walt Whitman channeling the Chaucer of America, Goodbye Gothic Rose is honest, funny, psychologically deep, and rich in literary references as well as pop culture to portray the experience of growing up from youth to graying in
America. It 's about sex, religion, identity, love, loss, youth and aging. With powerful honesty and humor, David's book confronts the male and female American experience, turns it upside down, shakes it out, and then reflects on it to become whole."

—Andrew Mayer, host/organizer of the Poetry SoCoCo readings, Santa Rosa, CA

Madonna Reborn (You heard it here first!)

"Goodbye Gothic Rose" author David Madgalene pictured above doing an impromptu pole dance on the streets of South Beach.

Just to give you an idea of how good “Goodbye Gothic Rose” is, I’m printing this next poem which was NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be included in the book! If I didn’t include poems this good, then that should only indicate to you how really and truly good a book “Goodbye Gothic Rose” is!!!!
Madonna Reborn

Aphrodite
&
Cupid
have shape-shifted
into
Madonna
w/
Christ Child.

Cupid
no longer
shoots his
frivolous arrow;
the
Christ Child
calls us to repentance.

Aphrodite
covers
her
nakedness,
forsaking the joys
of carnality

and now
fully-clad
in flowing robes
(all we see of her
beauty now is
her face, neck
and hands)

she bids us to
forsake,
as she has done,
our former
harlotry & whoremongering
and give ourselves
over to
the pleasures
of
celibate chastity…

after 2,000 years
of this—
she can’t take it anymore
and
throwing off
most of her clothes
(because one thing she has
found out in 2,000
years is men
prefer some clothes
because then they
have the benefit
of the striptease)

she becomes
a dance music
sensation—
former
celibate
today’s
celebrity—
who, not only becomes
one of the dominant forces
in popular music for several
decades, but her influence
extends out into the world
as well—

and it is safe to say
she has as many or more
fans
as she ever did
when she was
the Artist formerly
known as
Aphrodite
or
the Artist formerly
known as
the
Holy Immaculate Virgin
Mother of God.

Madonna
has
always been
skeletal
(she is a dancer
and has a thin
wiry dancer’s body
after all
as many millions of men
found out to their
chagrin & disappointment
when her bootleg pictures
appeared in Penthouse—

later as her sorcery
increased
and she became more
powerful,
she became better
at projecting
illusions).

Her face has
become more
and more
catlike
(since those of us who
know know that she
can change into a cat
or a young woman or
anything else she wants
at any time

but she’s peaked
and as her powers
erode, she’s
slipping up on her
protection
rituals)

while her skills
at French and Greek
and English
and in fact
all
varieties
of sex
remain undiminished—

Madonna
will
become only
more and more
skeletal
as time goes by
and
in time lose even
her oozy catface
and
become
a real skeleton—

and she will cover
herself up again—
like the
Virgin
of Guadalupe—
and
show her true
face—

Santa Muerte.

And she
will sing
“She’s not me”
for she will
try to confuse us

(which seems to be the
only point in this
whole exercise
for 1,000s for
years)

but we
will
not
be
confused—

nor shall we be
ashamed
to acknowledge
that
the Immaculate Virgin
in fact
was in fact nothing but a
lying whore
and
in fact ultimately
Death.

The pretty lady has
taken off her
makeup and divested
herself of
her disguises—
and, if she was
telling the
truth
(as she does once in awhile
when she’s not telling
lies)
she would tell us
“I am she.”

Male sexist chauvinistic
pig, I hear you say—
yet unlike m. s.
c. pigs
of the past (and in fact
it is up to neither you nor I
to determine whether I am in
fact a m. s. c. pig as
you allege, and of course I
deny it—it is in fact up
to Maiden Posterity to decide
that question)

I do not recoil
in
shock and fear
and
anger and horror
etc.
to discover that
my young
and beautiful whore
is not beautiful
was never a virgin
and is no longer if she
ever really was
my whore—

I mean that’s what
m. s. c. pigs
do—

and act all self-
righteous about it—

no, I should get down
on my knees

(that’s what you witches
want me to do
isn’t it?)

and taking your bony
hand in
mine
kiss it and say

“How good it is
to love thee,
Santa Muerte.
Blessed art thee
and
blessed is the
fruit
of
thy womb.”
